How does automated shift swapping work?
An employee posts a shift or requests a trade in the mobile app. Blue Roster identifies coworkers who are certified for the role, available, and would not exceed hour limits, then offers the shift to them. When someone accepts, the system validates every rule again before finalizing and updating the schedule for everyone.
Can employees swap shifts without manager approval?
That is configurable. Many operations allow swaps to auto-approve when every rule passes — certification, hours, rest periods, and cost — and require supervisor review only for exceptions. Others route every swap for approval. Both paths keep a full audit trail.
How do you prevent uncertified employees from picking up shifts?
Certifications are attached to each role and to each employee record with expiry dates. A shift requiring a specific certification is only ever offered to employees who currently hold it. An expired credential removes eligibility automatically, without anyone having to remember.
Does shift swapping create overtime?
Not silently. Every proposed swap is evaluated against the accepting employee’s projected weekly hours. If the trade would push them into overtime, the system flags the cost and either blocks it or routes it for explicit approval, depending on your rules.
